Authors are required to carefully read and follow these guidelines before submitting manuscripts to Al-Tafaqquh: Journal of Islamic Law.

A. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Manuscripts must be written in Indonesian or English, using clear, grammatically correct, and academically appropriate language.
  2. Manuscripts should comprise 11–15 pages, including references, tables, and figures. Longer manuscripts may be considered following editorial evaluation.
  3. Authors must use reference management software such as Zotero, Mendeley, or EndNote and follow the IEEE citation style.
  4. Manuscripts must follow the official Al-Tafaqquh manuscript template .
  5. Submissions must be original, unpublished, and not simultaneously under consideration by another journal.
  6. Research must fall within the journal's Focus and Scope and demonstrate a substantive contribution to Islamic legal scholarship.
  7. All authors must comply with the journal's publication ethics, authorship criteria, and academic integrity policies.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Manuscripts that do not satisfy these requirements may be returned for correction or declined during initial editorial screening.

B. STRUCTURE OF THE MANUSCRIPT

1. Title

The title should be concise, informative, and representative of the research problem, objectives, and scholarly contribution. Where appropriate, it may indicate the research approach or theoretical perspective. Avoid unnecessary acronyms and abbreviations.

2. Abstract

The abstract must contain no more than 250 words and clearly present:

  • The primary research objective.
  • The research design and methodology.
  • The main findings.
  • The principal conclusions and implications.

The abstract must be self-contained and must not include citations, references, tables, or figures.

3. Keywords

Provide 3–5 relevant keywords representing the main concepts, issues, and subject of the research.

4. Introduction

Explain the research background, problem statement, significance, relevant scholarly debates, research gap, novelty, and objectives. Clearly establish how the study contributes to contemporary Islamic legal scholarship.

5. Research Method

Describe the research design, methodological approach, sources, collection procedures, and analytical techniques. Suitable approaches include normative-juridical, doctrinal, empirical, socio-legal, comparative, historical, qualitative, and interdisciplinary research.

For normative Islamic legal studies, identify the legal sources, jurisprudential framework, and methods of legal reasoning used. For empirical studies, explain participant selection and relevant ethical safeguards.

6. Results and Discussion

Present the findings and develop a systematic, critical, and analytical discussion. Support the analysis with credible literature, relevant legal authorities, Islamic jurisprudential sources, and appropriate empirical or doctrinal evidence.

Explain the originality, scholarly significance, and theoretical or practical implications of the findings.

7. Conclusion

Directly address the research objectives, summarize the principal findings, and highlight the scholarly contribution. Where relevant, include recommendations, limitations, and directions for future research. Do not introduce substantial new findings.

8. References

Include at least 15 references, with a minimum of 60% consisting of scholarly journal articles. Prioritize reputable, relevant, and recent literature while retaining foundational legal and jurisprudential sources where necessary.

Follow IEEE style and include accurate DOI information whenever available.

C. CITATION AND REFERENCE STYLE

Al-Tafaqquh: Journal of Islamic Law applies the IEEE numbered referencing system. Number citations in square brackets according to their first appearance. Reuse the same number when citing the same source again.

Examples of In-Text Citations

Islamic legal reasoning evolves in response to social transformation [1].

Several studies examine Islamic law and legal pluralism [2], [3].

Previous research identifies different methodological approaches [4]–[6].

Example of a Journal Article Reference:

[1] A. A. Author and B. B. Author, "Title of article," Journal Title, vol. 10, no. 2, pp. 100–115, 2025, doi: 10.xxxx/xxxxx.

This is an illustrative formatting example, not an actual publication.

Arrange references in citation order. Ensure that every cited source appears in the reference list and every reference entry is cited in the manuscript.

D. TABLES AND FIGURES

  1. Use relevant, clear, and legible tables and figures.
  2. Provide consecutive numbering and descriptive captions.
  3. Acknowledge sources and obtain permission where required for reproduced or adapted materials.
  4. Refer to and discuss each table and figure in the manuscript.
  5. Provide figures and diagrams at sufficient resolution for publication.

E. PUBLICATION ETHICS AND ORIGINALITY

Authors are responsible for the originality, accuracy, integrity, and reliability of their research. Plagiarism, fabrication, falsification, duplicate submission, citation manipulation, and inappropriate authorship practices are prohibited.

Research involving human participants must follow applicable ethical standards, including informed consent, confidentiality, and institutional ethical approval where required. Explain the consent procedure and relevant approval or exemption, as applicable.

Disclose funding sources, potential conflicts of interest, and substantive use of generative artificial intelligence, identifying the tools and purposes of use. Authors must verify the accuracy of all content, citations, and research materials.

E.1. AUTHORSHIP CRITERIA

Authorship signifies scholarly contribution and responsibility. Every person listed as an author must satisfy all four requirements below:

  1. Substantial intellectual contribution: Contribute significantly to the research question or design, or to collecting, analysing, or interpreting research materials, including legislation, judicial decisions, Islamic jurisprudential sources, interviews, or archival records.
  2. Writing or substantive revision: Draft the manuscript or critically revise its arguments, interpretation, or other intellectual content.
  3. Approval: Approve the manuscript submitted to the journal and the final version to be published.
  4. Accountability: Accept responsibility for the work and assist in investigating and resolving questions about its accuracy or integrity.

Author Contributions and Acknowledgements

Include a contribution statement identifying each author's actual role. Contributors who satisfy the substantial-contribution requirement must have the opportunity to participate in revision and final approval.

Funding, institutional position, administrative support, general supervision, proofreading, or translation alone does not qualify a person for authorship. Other contributors may be acknowledged with their permission.

Corresponding Author

The corresponding author coordinates communication with the journal, verifies author details, and ensures that all authors approve the author list, order, contribution statement, and submission. Editorial queries and manuscript revisions must be communicated to the co-authors.

Changes to Authorship

Requests to add or remove an author or change the author order must explain the reason and include written agreement from all affected authors, including anyone being added or removed. Changes require editorial approval. Approved changes after publication must be documented through a formal correction.

Inappropriate Authorship and Disputes

Guest, honorary, gift, and ghost authorship are prohibited. Unresolved authorship disputes may result in a pause in editorial processing and referral to the relevant institution. Artificial intelligence tools cannot be authors; human authors remain responsible for the manuscript.

AUTHORSHIP CONFIRMATION: By submitting a manuscript, the corresponding author confirms that every listed author meets these criteria and that no eligible author has been omitted.

F. MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION

Submit manuscripts electronically through the journal's Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform.

  1. Register or log in as an author.
  2. Prepare the manuscript using the official journal template.
  3. For double-blind review, remove author names, affiliations, and identifying acknowledgements from the review manuscript. Supply identifying information separately through OJS as required.
  4. Check compliance with these guidelines and the authorship criteria.
  5. Upload the manuscript and required supplementary documents.
  6. Complete the submission metadata, including all author details, abstract, and keywords.
  7. Monitor editorial decisions and revision requests through the OJS author dashboard.
