FOCUS AND SCOPE

Islamic Knowledge, Ethical Formation, and Social Practice

Focus

Jurnal Ilmiah Islamic Resources publishes original research on how Islamic knowledge is interpreted, transmitted, and translated into ethical conduct and social practice. The journal connects the study of the Qur'an, Hadith, and Islamic intellectual traditions with contemporary experiences of learning, preaching, spiritual development, and community life.

Its distinctive focus is the relationship between sources of Islamic knowledge, the formation of religious understanding, and their practical expression in society. Particular attention is given to Indonesia and the Malay-Indonesian world, including local scholarly traditions, educational institutions, religious communities, and changing media environments. Comparative studies are welcomed when they illuminate these relationships.

Distinctive Scholarly Orientation

The journal explores how Islamic sources acquire meaning in specific settings, how that meaning is taught and communicated, and how it shapes moral agency, religious practice, and collective life.

Scope

The journal welcomes contributions in the following interconnected areas:

  1. Qur'anic and Hadith Interpretation in Context
Interpretive methods, the history and circulation of tafsir, thematic readings, and the reception of Qur'anic and Hadith teachings in everyday life, particularly within Indonesian scholarly and social contexts.
  2. Islamic Theology, Spirituality, and Moral Agency
Relationships between belief, spiritual experience, and ethical responsibility; encounters between akidah and tasawuf; and the contribution of Islamic teachings to emotional maturity, personal accountability, and social relations.
  3. Islamic Education and the Transmission of Knowledge
Teaching and learning in schools, madrasahs, pesantren, universities, families, and communities, with emphasis on religious literacy, pedagogical practices, teacher authority, and the formation of character through Islamic knowledge.
  4. Da'wah, Media, and Religious Communication
Da'wah in face-to-face, radio, audiovisual, and digital environments; religious message production and reception; preaching competence; communication ethics; and religious credibility and authority on social media.
  5. Indonesian Islamic Intellectual and Local Traditions
Ulama networks, manuscripts, vernacular interpretations, religious narratives, and community-based knowledge, including their interaction with local wisdom, cultural memory, and diverse Muslim experiences.
  6. Islamic Ethics and Public Life
Islamic ethical ideas in community relationships, leadership, citizenship, and social responsibility, including relations between society and political authority, public trust, and responses to contemporary social challenges.

Research Approaches

The journal welcomes textual, historical, qualitative, quantitative, comparative, and interdisciplinary research. Approaches may include tafsir and Hadith studies, intellectual history, ethnography, educational research, media and discourse analysis, and the sociology and psychology of religion. Research questions, sources, methods, and analytical frameworks must be clearly explained.

MANUSCRIPT RELEVANCE

Submissions must establish an explicit connection between Islamic sources or intellectual traditions and the interpretive, educational, communicative, ethical, or social processes examined. Muslim participants or an Islamic institutional setting alone do not establish relevance. Manuscripts must offer a clear argument and an identifiable scholarly contribution beyond descriptive summaries, collections of religious quotations, or activity reports.

PEER REVIEW POLICY

Independent Assessment, Constructive Feedback, and Scholarly Integrity

1. Review Model

Jurnal Ilmiah Islamic Resources (JIIR) applies double-blind peer review. Author identities are withheld from reviewers, and reviewer identities are withheld from authors. Authors must prepare an anonymized manuscript, including removal of identifying information from file properties and acknowledgements.

Manuscripts passing initial editorial screening are normally assessed by at least two independent reviewers with relevant expertise. Reviewers provide recommendations; the handling editor makes the editorial decision.

2. Initial Editorial Screening

The editorial team evaluates each submission for:

  • Alignment with the journal's Focus and Scope.
  • Originality and a clearly identifiable scholarly contribution.
  • Clarity of the research question and adequacy of the methodology.
  • Compliance with author guidelines and manuscript requirements.
  • Language quality, presentation, and readiness for review.
  • Research ethics, authorship, and potential conflicts of interest.
  • Textual overlap and possible plagiarism, assessed through similarity screening and editorial examination.
Editorial Screening Outcome

A manuscript may be sent for peer review, returned for preliminary corrections, or declined without external review. Similarity scores are interpreted in context and do not independently determine plagiarism.

3. Reviewer Selection and Independence

Reviewers are selected according to their subject expertise, methodological competence, and ability to provide an independent assessment. Expertise may include Qur'anic and Hadith studies, Islamic theology and spirituality, Islamic education, da'wah and media, local Islamic traditions, and Islamic ethics.

Reviewers must disclose relationships or interests that could affect impartiality, including close collaboration, institutional relationships, personal relationships, or financial interests. Reviewers must decline an invitation when a conflict prevents an independent assessment.

4. Assessment Criteria

  1. Relevance and Contribution
Alignment with the journal's focus and a substantive contribution to understanding Islamic knowledge, ethical formation, or social practice.
  2. Conceptual and Source Integrity
Appropriate use of Islamic concepts, accurate interpretation of Qur'anic and Hadith materials where relevant, reliable attribution, and critical engagement with scholarly traditions.
  3. Methodological Soundness
A suitable research design, transparent selection of sources or participants, appropriate analytical procedures, and acknowledgement of limitations.
  4. Evidence and Analysis
Credible evidence, coherent arguments, and conclusions supported by the analysis. Textual interpretation must distinguish source content from the author's analytical claims.
  5. Contextual Understanding
Attention to the historical, educational, cultural, institutional, or media context relevant to the research question.
  6. Literature and Presentation
Engagement with relevant scholarship, accurate citations, a logical structure, and clear academic language.
  7. Ethical Compliance
Appropriate consent and participant protection where applicable, responsible authorship, and disclosure of funding, competing interests, and substantive AI use.

Assessment must address the quality of scholarship rather than agreement with a particular theological position, school of thought, institution, or personal viewpoint.

5. Editorial Decisions

Following review, the editor may issue one of the following decisions:

  • Accept Submission: The manuscript meets publication requirements, subject to routine editorial preparation.
  • Revisions Required: Specific changes are needed and may be assessed by the editor or returned to reviewers.
  • Resubmit for Review: Substantial revision and a further round of peer review are necessary.
  • Decline Submission: The manuscript does not meet the journal's scholarly, methodological, ethical, or scope requirements.

When recommendations differ substantially, the editor may consult an additional reviewer or seek clarification. Decisions are based on the substance of the assessments rather than a simple vote.

6. Revision and Further Review

Authors must submit a revised manuscript and a point-by-point response explaining how each editorial and reviewer comment has been addressed. Disagreement with a recommendation must be supported by a clear scholarly explanation.

Revision deadlines are communicated through OJS. Authors needing additional time should contact the editor before the deadline. Revised manuscripts may undergo further review; an invitation to revise does not guarantee acceptance.

7. Confidentiality and Reviewer Responsibilities

  • Manuscripts and review communications must be treated as confidential.
  • Unpublished ideas or findings must not be used for personal advantage.
  • Reviews must be respectful, specific, evidence-based, and constructive.
  • Reviewers must not seek citations solely to increase their own citation counts or those of a particular journal.
  • Suspected misconduct must be reported privately to the editor.
  • Reviewers must not delegate a review or share a manuscript without editorial authorization.
  • Confidential manuscripts must not be uploaded to public AI tools or other services that cannot guarantee confidentiality. Reviewers remain personally responsible for their assessments.

8. Submissions by Editors and Editorial Board Members

Submissions authored by editors or editorial board members follow the same review requirements as other submissions. An independent editor without a relevant conflict handles reviewer selection and decisions. Author-editors must not participate in the evaluation or decision on their own manuscripts.

9. Appeals and Complaints

Authors may submit a reasoned appeal through the journal's editorial contact. Appeals should identify a specific factual error, procedural concern, or substantive misunderstanding and include supporting evidence. Where an appeal concerns a handling editor's conduct or conflict of interest, another qualified editor will assess it. An appeal does not guarantee reversal of the decision.

EDITORIAL INDEPENDENCE

Publication fees, institutional affiliations, and personal relationships must not influence reviewer recommendations or editorial decisions. Review duration depends on reviewer availability and the extent of revision; acceptance is never guaranteed in advance.

ARCHIVING AND DIGITAL PRESERVATION

Supporting Long-Term Access to Islamic Scholarship

Archiving Commitment

Jurnal Ilmiah Islamic Resources (JIIR) supports the long-term preservation and continued accessibility of published scholarship. Published issues and articles are organized through the journal's Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform and accessible through the Journal Archives .

LOCKSS Support

The journal's OJS platform supports LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe), a distributed digital preservation system that enables participating libraries to collect, preserve, and provide access to scholarly content.

Through the OJS LOCKSS functionality, journal content can be made available for collection by participating preservation networks via a LOCKSS Publisher Manifest. Distributed copies help protect the scholarly record against loss and support continued access in accordance with the participating network's preservation arrangements.

Preservation Status

Technical support for LOCKSS does not by itself confirm active preservation. Collection and preservation depend on acceptance by an appropriate LOCKSS network and confirmation that the journal's content is being collected. Confirmed network participation will be identified on the journal website.

Preservation of the Scholarly Record

Archiving arrangements should retain published article files, bibliographic metadata, and associated corrections or retraction notices. Substantive changes to published content must be documented transparently, with relevant notices linked to the affected articles.

Authors are encouraged to deposit permitted versions of their articles in institutional or subject repositories, in accordance with the applicable copyright and article license. Deposited copies should include the complete citation and a DOI or link to the original publication.

Enquiries

Questions about archive access, missing article files, or preservation arrangements may be directed to the editorial office .

Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement

JIIR

Jurnal Ilmiah Islamic Resources

PUBLICATION ETHICS AND MALPRACTICE STATEMENT

Integrity, Fairness, and Responsibility in Islamic Scholarship

1. Ethical Commitment

Jurnal Ilmiah Islamic Resources (JIIR) requires responsible research and publication practices from authors, reviewers, editors, and the publisher. These responsibilities apply throughout submission, assessment, publication, and post-publication discussion.

Scholarship must demonstrate honesty in presenting evidence, fairness in interpreting sources, respect for research participants, and transparency about contributions and interests. Academic evaluation must remain independent of institutional influence, payment, or personal relationships.

2. Responsibilities of Authors

  • Originality: Submit original work, acknowledge sources accurately, and disclose relevant related publications or earlier versions.
  • Accurate reporting: Present methods, evidence, findings, and limitations honestly. Fabrication, falsification, and misleading presentation are prohibited.
  • Exclusive submission: Do not submit the same manuscript to multiple journals simultaneously or publish substantially duplicated research without appropriate disclosure and justification.
  • Responsible authorship: Include only eligible authors, identify their contributions, and obtain agreement on the manuscript and author order. Guest, gift, honorary, and ghost authorship are prohibited.
  • Disclosure: Declare funding, funder involvement, relevant competing interests, and substantive use of generative AI.
  • Correction of errors: Notify the editor promptly of a significant error and cooperate in correcting the publication record.

3. Research Participants and Sensitive Materials

Research involving people must address informed consent, confidentiality, and ethical approval or exemption where required. Authors should explain the relevant procedures and provide supporting documentation to editors when requested.

Protect children, vulnerable participants, and communities exposed to social or reputational harm. Public availability of online material does not remove the need to consider privacy and contextual sensitivity. Obtain appropriate permission before publishing identifiable interviews, images, or personal information.

4. Integrity in Islamic Source Interpretation

  • Attribute Qur'anic passages, Hadith, classical works, translations, and contemporary scholarship accurately.
  • Distinguish original sources, scholarly interpretations, and the author's own analysis.
  • Avoid selective quotation that materially distorts a source's meaning or historical context.
  • Represent differing theological, intellectual, and cultural traditions fairly, using evidence-based criticism rather than discriminatory or derogatory language.

5. Responsibilities of Editors

  • Base decisions on scholarly contribution, methodological quality, ethical compliance, and relevance to the journal.
  • Evaluate submissions fairly without discrimination based on personal identity, institutional affiliation, religion, nationality, or political opinion.
  • Arrange independent review by appropriately qualified reviewers and protect double-blind review procedures.
  • Keep unpublished manuscripts and editorial correspondence confidential, sharing them only as needed for legitimate editorial assessment.
  • Disclose conflicts and transfer handling to an independent editor when impartiality could be compromised.
  • Assess complaints and integrity concerns consistently, including those raised after publication.

6. Responsibilities of Reviewers

  • Accept reviews only when suitable expertise, availability, and independence permit a responsible assessment.
  • Provide respectful, specific, and evidence-based feedback. Explain substantive criticisms and distinguish essential revisions from optional suggestions.
  • Disclose competing interests and withdraw when impartiality cannot be maintained.
  • Protect confidentiality and do not use unpublished work for personal advantage.
  • Do not delegate a review or upload confidential manuscripts to public AI services without editorial authorization and appropriate confidentiality safeguards.
  • Report suspected misconduct privately to the editor. Do not request citations solely to increase citation counts.

7. Publisher Responsibilities

The publisher supports editorial independence, transparent publication policies, and the integrity of the scholarly record. Commercial or institutional interests must not determine acceptance. The publisher should support necessary corrections, investigations, and preservation arrangements without interfering with impartial scholarly decisions.

8. Artificial Intelligence and Research Materials

AI tools cannot qualify as authors. Human authors remain accountable for accuracy, attribution, confidentiality, and the validity of all claims and references. Substantive AI assistance must be disclosed with the tool and purpose identified.

Authors must retain research materials needed to substantiate their findings and provide them for reasonable editorial verification when lawful and ethically permissible. Data sharing must respect consent, privacy, and applicable restrictions; confidential data need not be made public.

9. Handling Allegations of Misconduct

Concerns should identify the manuscript or article, the suspected problem, and available supporting evidence. The editorial team will:

  1. Assess the specificity and credibility of the concern.
  2. Seek clarification and relevant evidence where necessary.
  3. Give the persons concerned an opportunity to respond.
  4. Pause processing or seek independent advice when appropriate.
  5. Refer matters requiring formal investigation to the relevant institution or responsible body.
  6. Take proportionate editorial action based on the findings.

Anonymous reports may be assessed when sufficiently specific and supported. Information will be shared only as needed for assessment, procedural fairness, or investigation.

10. Corrections and Post-Publication Action

Limited errors may require a correction. Serious unresolved concerns may justify an expression of concern. Unreliable findings, substantial plagiarism, or other fundamental problems may require retraction.

Notices should explain the reason and remain linked to the affected article. Retracted articles normally remain available with clear identification. Exceptional removal requires compelling justification and an explanatory notice wherever possible.

11. Appeals and Complaints

Authors may appeal a decision by identifying a factual error, procedural concern, or substantive misunderstanding and providing evidence. Complaints involving an editor should be handled by another qualified, independent person. Appeals do not guarantee a change in the decision.
