POLICY OF SCREENING FOR PLAGIARISM

Original Scholarship, Accurate Attribution, and Academic Integrity

1. Originality and Screening

Jurnal Ilmiah Islamic Resources (JIIR) requires original manuscripts with accurate acknowledgement of all sources. Submissions are subject to similarity screening and editorial examination before external peer review. Revised manuscripts may be screened again when necessary.

Similarity-detection software supports the assessment, but editorial decisions depend on examination of the matched passages, their sources, and their scholarly context.

2. Similarity Threshold

Similarity Requirement: Below 20%

Manuscripts are expected to have an overall similarity score below 20%, assessed using consistent screening settings. Bibliographies, properly marked quotations, and standard phrases may be excluded where appropriate. Screening settings and exclusions should be documented.

A score below 20% does not establish freedom from plagiarism, and a higher score does not independently prove misconduct. Extensive unattributed borrowing from a single source may be unacceptable even when the overall score is low. Manuscripts exceeding the threshold require editorial examination before further processing.

3. Unacceptable Practices

  • Unattributed copying: Reproducing another person's words without quotation and appropriate citation.
  • Inadequate paraphrasing: Making superficial wording changes while retaining a source's expression or structure without proper attribution.
  • Misappropriation of ideas or materials: Presenting another person's arguments, interpretations, data, tables, figures, or research instruments as original.
  • Translation plagiarism: Translating material from another language and presenting it without acknowledging its source.
  • Undisclosed text recycling or duplicate publication: Reusing substantial portions of previously published work, including the authors' own work, without appropriate citation and disclosure.

4. Islamic Texts and Classical Sources

Studies involving the Qur'an, Hadith, classical Islamic works, or established religious expressions may contain legitimate textual overlap. Editors assess such matches in context rather than treating shared wording as automatic evidence of plagiarism.

  • Identify Qur'anic quotations by surah and verse.
  • Provide identifiable sources for Hadith quotations.
  • Cite classical works with relevant edition, volume, and page details where available.
  • Attribute published translations and distinguish them from the author's own translations.
  • Clearly separate quoted sources from original interpretation and analysis.

5. Editorial Assessment and Action

Editors consider the amount, location, attribution, and significance of overlapping material. Depending on the findings, the journal may:

  1. Continue processing when matches are legitimate and adequately attributed.
  2. Request correction of limited citation or quotation problems.
  3. Pause evaluation and request an explanation or supporting documents when substantial concerns arise.
  4. Decline a submission when substantial plagiarism or duplicate publication is established.

Authors will be given an opportunity to respond to substantive concerns. Serious or unresolved cases may be referred to the relevant institution. Concerns identified after publication may require a correction, expression of concern, or retraction, according to the evidence and effect on the scholarly record.

6. Author Responsibilities

Authors must verify quotations, references, translations, and permissions before submission. Previously disseminated versions and relevant related publications must be disclosed. Paraphrasing tools or generative AI do not remove the obligation to acknowledge sources or make borrowed material original.

REPORTING A CONCERN

Suspected plagiarism may be reported confidentially to the editorial office . Include the article details, the original source, and specific passages or materials requiring examination.
